Atelier Isserlis – a musical heritage

Throughout history, classical music has relied on the tradition of great masters passing on their knowledge and skills to younger generations. Helsinki Festival's Atelier Isserlis - a musical heritage series springs from this very idea.

The series, a collaboration between Helsinki Festival and the OP-Pohjola Group, will see world-renowned cellist Steven Isserlis visit Finland to play with some of our most gifted musicians. Musical talents from across the generational divide will come together in a four-concert series, with programmes designed by Isserlis. All Finnish participants to the series will be playing a selection of rare instruments from the OP-Pohjola Group Art Foundation.

The project will also comprise an outreach programme with local schools. The Finnish musicians participating in the series will each plan a lesson aimed at three different year groups, during which they will speak to the pupils about their careers and have an opportunity to pass on their expertise. In addition to the lessons, the pupils will be invited to watch rehearsals with the musicians and Steven Isserlis. This will ensure that their unique skills are passed on to a new generation.

The Atelier Isserlis - a musical heritage series resumes the collaboration between Helsinki Festival and the OP-Pohjola Group, which for the past two years has taken the form of the Chamber music at the City Hall concert series.
